English

The Besant Hill School English Department provides a rigorous education in the reading, comprehension, and contemplation of literature through writing and discourse.

As a dedicated preparatory school, our students are required to write, revise, and edit works of both creative and academic writing. Additionally, courses put a special focus on the techniques of proper research writing strategies. The literature covered in our courses spans the globe and the decades, and students acquire an understanding and appreciation for all types of writing and genres. In addition, our English courses cover vocabulary learning, grammatical studies, and emphasize the importance of class discussion.

Students of English will begin with two year-long courses in their freshman and sophomore years that provide a foundation for academic writing at the high school level, teaching them the proper techniques for writing and reading English. Junior and senior students may continue this study in mainstream English as they prepare for the writing that will be expected in college and beyond, or they may choose to challenge themselves in the year-long Honors Junior English or Advanced Placement: Literature and Composition in their senior year.

Head of School, English Teacher

“My favorite part of teaching English is exposing students to different ways of thinking and living around the world and throughout time. It allows us to live the Portrait of a Graduate everyday in class.”

Sam Yarabek

English Teacher

“Class sizes at Besant Hill empower each and every student to be an integral part of each and every day in our community. This is the power of small. And I get to keep learning because each and every day I am awakened to the wonder of the hearts and minds of my students.”

Mary Spence

English Teacher

“My favorite aspect of Besant Hill is the diversity of our students. They truly bring a global perspective and curiosity to our classrooms, and our discussions about literature are full of questions and exploration. There’s no ‘right’ answer when it becomes clear that there are so many different ways to examine a text.”
