Screenwriting & Film Production

The Film is a comprehensive introductory course to filmmaking. Throughout the first semester, students cultivate an understanding of film terminology and techniques ranging from saying “action” for the first time on set to editing their first short films. While there can be a desire to create youtube-like content, this course is designed to help students produce more depthful projects. Story is key, so each student learns to turn their ideas into screenplay format. In the second Semester, students will take their screenplays to production. Making the important decisions as director, acting in each other’s films, and a fulfilling a variety of other rolls on set, the each student will have the opportunity to not only have a crew but to participate in a range of capacities in the filmmaking process.

By the end of the year each student will have completed a short film of their own creation, and many will have the opportunity to submit to their films to the Ojai Young Filmmakers Competition, where they can show their films amongst those of other young filmmakers in the area.
