Thank you for your interest in Besant Hill School.

The English Language Learning program offers two levels of composition and literature classes as well as a support class for language learners. Students are placed in either intermediate or advanced level courses based on individual assessment of reading, writing, and speaking during a scheduled online or in person meeting with the ESL teacher. The student’s prior English and academic experiences are also taken into account when placing a student in English as a Second Language (ESL) levels. We honor each student’s different learning style, and testing is used to make appropriate placements that will support student success with the Besant Hill curricula.

The ELL program is designed to equip students with the language skills, academic tools, and confidence needed for success in college and beyond. Through targeted instruction and individualized support, students develop strong reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities that prepare them to thrive in both academic and real-world settings. Those who complete the support class transition seamlessly into mainstream English classes, where they continue to grow alongside their peers. This progression reflects their readiness for the demands of higher education and future professional opportunities.

As a certified ETS (Educational Testing Service) testing site, students have a statistical advantage on the TOEFL in their ability to test at their home campus. By working with the ESL Instructor, Director of Academics, and Director of College Counseling, we ensure that students have all the credits for high school graduation and college acceptance.
