Learning How to Learn

The Instructional Support Program (ISP) is a specialized program designed to teach students who they are as learners and how to discover their unique path to academic success. Rather than modifying lesson plans, we accommodate different learning needs to maintain our college preparatory curriculum.  Through the teaching of metacognitive strategies and executive functioning skills, students:

  • Learn about their individual learning profile
  • Develop a growth mindset and learn strategies that will help them to achieve success in school
  • Receive instruction in organization, time management, self-advocacy, and academic subject area assistance

“We’re really grateful to have the opportunity to send two children to Besant, each with polar opposite learning styles, temperaments and interests. Besant Hill is a wonderful environment that can really meet every student where their individual strengths are.”

Gilden, parent of Alev ‘23 and Eero ‘25

Individualized Support

The program is designed to offer students individualized instruction in learning strategies. Organization and time management skills are the foundation of this program. Additionally, students receive both individual and small group support for the academic work of their core curriculum classes.

Faculty-Supported Area of Study

ISP study hall is open Sunday-Thursday evenings. Students attend ISP study hall to complete their work in an ISP-staffed and structured  environment.

Assistive Technology

Students are introduced to various assistive technologies, like Learning Ally and Google Read and Write, to facilitate academic learning.  ISP students receive instruction in the use of this technology and the application of the technology to their academic learning.

“In the Instructional Support Program, I not only found the motivation to excel academically but also learned invaluable life skills – consistency, self-advocacy, and effective communication. The guidance I received was nothing short of transformative. My teachers, like Mary, went above and beyond, starting our days together with invigorating jogs that set the tone for positive and productive learning.”
