Besant Hill School Spring Arts Celebration

Spring Arts Celebration and Family Weekend, April 27 & 28, 2018

On the weekend of April 27 and 28, Besant Hill School will host their annual Spring Arts Weekend Celebrations for families, alumni, and friends. It’s also an opportunity for the local Ojai community and surrounding area to tour Besant Hill’s uniquely beautiful campus in upper Ojai, enjoy a student-curated art exhibit, hear students perform a Spring Concert, Spring Musical and get to know the school community.

The weekend kicks off Friday, April 27 at 2pm with a Student Art Exhibit at the Logan House, located next door to Besant Hill’s campus and adjacent to Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts. This student-curated art show features the school’s extensive visual arts program including ceramics, paintings, prints, photography, and sculpture

Following the exhibit, a reception and registration for weekend visitors will be held at the Beato Atelier, the campus art studio named after Ojai’s legendary ceramicist Beatrice “Beato”  Wood. Additional student artwork will be on display along with snacks and beverages. Chefs Juana and Mary will also prepare a special dinner for current families, alumni, and guests full of fresh, organic Spring produce from Rio Gozo Farm, who cultivate over five acres of campus land and provide seasonal produce to the school’s in-house dining service throughout the year.

At 7pm, the festivities move to Besant Hill School’s Zalk Theater as The Performing Arts Department, with a cast of 27 students presents the Broadway musical Once Upon A Mattress, directed by Arts Department Chair Dan Call. The show is a comic/slapstick retelling of the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. Once Upon a Mattress opened on Broadway in 1959 and starred Carol Burnett in the leading role of Princess Winnifred, AKA Fred.

Saturday afternoon, campus tours will cover a myriad of recent upgrades while highlighting the school’s grander achievements including 2014’s Doornink Grove (four new faculty/student homes) and 2016’s Lee Sanders Aquatic Center (state-of-the-art swimming pool and facilities). Saturday also includes a Spring Concert featuring student and faculty playing a wide variety of musical genres from choral music to rock and roll. From there, guests will join together for a special Tribute and Dinner Celebration, recognizing a member of the school community.

Saturday’s events will be topped off with a second performance of Once Upon a Mattress, for those not able to attend Friday’s show.

While celebrating students’ many achievements in the arts, Spring Arts Weekend provides a chance for families and alumni to reconnect, and for new and prospective families to experience and explore the school campus and community.
