It’s Once Upon a Mattress for this Year’s Spring Musical!

April 27 and 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the Zalk Theater

The Performing Arts Department, with a cast of 27 students, will present the Broadway musical Once Upon A Mattress, directed by Arts Department Chair Dan Call, on Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the Zalk Theater.

Produced by special arrangement with Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatricals, the show is a comic/slapstick retelling of the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. Once Upon a Mattress opened on Broadway in 1959 and starred Carol Burnett in the leading role of Princess Winnifred, AKA Fred. The book was by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer (who also wrote the lyrics) with music by Mary Rodgers, daughter of Richard Rodgers.

The show is set in a fictional medieval kingdom ruled by the scheming and never-quiet Queen Aggravain and the mute King Sextimus. It has been decreed that no one in the kingdom may marry until the Prince, Dauntless the Drab, marries. However, since the Queen doesn’t want Dauntless to marry, a long succession of possible Princess brides is presented, only to be thrown out because they cannot pass royal lineage tests designed (for their failure) by the Queen and the Wizard. That is until Princess Winnifred arrives by swimming the moat. As for the rest of the tale, well, you’ll have to find out what happens by seeing the production!
