Chicago: Spring Musical, 2015
Tonight, during a cool California Spring evening, the Zalk Theater was full of students, family, friends, alumni, as well as folks from the Ojai community. All were fully entertained by a fantastic, energetic production of Chicago. It was the culmination of months of hard work by the Performing Arts Department, cast and crew members, and support of many others. Anyone who attended was surely humming the tune to “All That Jazz” for quite some time!
Directed by Performing Arts Chair Dan Call, choreography by dance instructor Leah Salaiz, lighting design by Claire Cleary, set design by Neva Williams, with costumes by DeeDee Fried P’15.

Chicago, based on the 1926 play “Chicago” by Maurine Dallas Watkins, was first performed on Broadway in 1975, revived in 1991 in a run that continues to this day, and was made into a successful film in 2006. Music was written by John Kander, with lyrics by Fred Ebb. Book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. Memorable musical numbers include “All That Jazz,” “The Cell Block Tango,” and “Razzle Dazzle.” Starring in the lead roles of Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart are Madi K. ’16 and Amber M. ’15, respectively. Criminal lawyer Billy Flynn is played by Michael H. ’16, Heulyn G. ’16 performs the role of Roxie’s husband Amos, Cate S. ’17 plays Mama Morton, and rounding out the principal cast is Michael A. ’18 as reporter Mary Sunshine. The Merry Murderesses are played by Sienna J. ’17, Angelica E. ’15, Katie B. ’17, Nile H. ’16, and Hannah R. ’16. Other cast members included: Tristin K. ’15, Briggs Y. ’15, Roman K. ’15, Aaron B. ’16, Addy M. ’16, Dan T. ’16, Cobin H. ‘18, Parker G. ’18, Esther G. ’17, Ruby H ’16, Jasmine H. ’15, Yu-Chien W ’15, Michelle L.’16, Paige M. ’16, Emily K. ’18, Pablo A. ‘15, Andrew Y. ’16, Charlie C ’18, YiYi Z. ’17, and Sabrina Q. ’16.
