B.F.A. Boston University

Ray Singer, the screenwriting and film production teacher at BHS, holds a BFA from Boston University. He’s appeared on and off-Broadway in his hometown of New York City, with some of the country's finest repertory theaters, and in more than 100 TV shows and feature films, and as a regular role on three TV series. He and his wife, Eugenia Bostwick-Singer, are the award-winning screenwriters of Disney's Mulan, HBO's Iron Jawed Angels, Dreamworks' Joseph, King of Dreams, and a half-dozen made-for-TV movies.

Ray comes to BHS with an extensive teaching resume which includes schools as diverse as Calvin College, Hamline College, Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, Cal State Channel Islands, The Putney School and Dankook University (in Seoul, Korea). While teaching film production and screenwriting at BHS, he continues to be an active filmmaker, editing features and documentaries for HBO, non-profits and independent producers and directors. He’s created several films for BHS and is in production on a documentary about veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who’ve discovered small scale organic farming to be a healing transition back to civilian life and a way to maintain their sense of purpose and mission.

It’s Ray’s firm belief that stories are an important part of an individual’s - and a culture’s - growth and change, and that film is this generation’s preferred storytelling medium. He hopes this class will challenge students to express and share their own stories, questions, hopes and fears through the medium of film. In this he’s ably assisted by Eugenia, who takes the lead in the screenwriting portion of the class.

Ray and Eugenia live in Ojai with their daughter, Ana Ming Bostwick-Singer, currently a junior at BHS. When he’s not teaching, he spends precious time with his family and what’s left, in the editing bay or behind a camera.
