Peter Bergen joins the Besant Hill community bringing eleven years of teaching and fifteen years of independent day and boarding school experience. Peter was born in the suburbs of Philadelphia, where his family still resides. He graduated from Slippery Rock University with a Bachelor's in history. Upon graduation, he began teaching in Malvern, PA, at the Phelps School. He taught economics, government, American and world History. In addition, as part of the residential staff, he was responsible for a boys' dormitory for eight years. He also coached varsity soccer and baseball. While at Phelps, Peter completed his Master’s of Education at Cabrini College and met his wife, Lindsay. In 2003 Peter left Phelps and has been involved in a variety of administration positions, such as admissions, Associate Dean of Resident Life and Head of House. Most recently, Peter spent time working with special education students diagnosed with learning differences.
Outside of the classroom, Peter is a natural athlete, and you can find him participating in a wide range of team sports ranging from baseball, softball, football and hockey. He also enjoys biking and weightlifting. Peter is also an avid reader and on any given day enjoys reading a variety of genres of books. Peter and Lindsay live in EOS dormitory. Lindsay is a member of the Science Department and teaches in the life sciences. Complementing the Bergen family is Madelyn, Peter and Lindsay’s daughter. The Bergens are energized and excited to be a part of a boarding school environment and particularly so, at Besant Hill School in Ojai, California.
