SPANISH

SPANISH 1


In this beginners' course, students will learn how to:

  • introduce and describe people
  • describe places
  • make comparisons (people and places)
  • talk about family members
  • use numbers up to a million in real situations
  • conjugate regular verbs and common irregular verbs in present tense
  • conjugate regular verbs and common irregular verbs in future tense
  • create your own sentences in the interrogative, negative and affirmative forms (present and future tenses)
  • talk about what they like and dislike (express emotions)
  • talk about the weather
90% of study in the Spanish courses will focus on conversation. The remainder will focus on writing and grammar.

At the end of Spanish 1, students will be able to speak comfortably with a minimum vocabulary of 500 words. The goal is that by the end of level 4, students will reach fluency.

Cultural instruction includes study of Latinos in the United States, their holidays and celebrations. Special events and activities are planned for Day of the Dead, the Christmas Posada and Cinco de Mayo.

Level: Beginners

Prerequisite: None




SPANISH 2


In this beginner/intermediate level course, students will learn how to:

  • use prepositions to give directions
  • use prepositions to indicate location
  • conjugate common irregular verbs in present tense
  • conjugate regular verbs in present progressive
  • conjugate reflexive verbs
  • create your own sentences in the interrogative, negative and affirmative forms (present progressive and past tense)
  • conjugate regular verbs in past tense
90% of study in the Spanish courses will focus on conversation. The remainder will focus on writing and grammar.

At the end of Spanish 2, students will be able to speak comfortably with a minimum vocabulary of 1,000 words.

The goal is that by the end of level 4, students will reach fluency.

Cultural instruction includes study of Spain, its food, art, architecture, and tourist destinations. Special events and activities are planned for Day of the Dead, the Christmas Posada and Cinco de Mayo

Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Prerequisite: A minimum of 80% oral competency in Spanish 1 class content as described above.




SPANISH 3


In this intermediate-level course, students will learn how to:

  • talk about imaginary situations (conditional tense)
  • conjugate regular verbs in the past progressive tense
  • conjugate regular verbs in the past imperfect tense
  • talk about Geography, transportation and the environment
  • talk about traveling
  • talk about different kinds of food
  • create your own sentences in the interrogative, negative and affirmative forms (conditional, past progressive and imperfect tenses)
90% of study in the Spanish courses will focus on conversation. The remainder will focus on writing and grammar.

At the end of Spanish 3, students will be able to speak comfortably with a minimum vocabulary of 1,500 words. The goal is that by the end of level 4, students will reach fluency.

Cultural instruction includes study of Puerto Rico, its history and political situation and the tropical rainforest. Special events and activities are planned for Day of the Dead, the Christmas Posada and Cinco de Mayo.

Level: Intermediate

Prerequisite: A minimum of 80% oral competency in Spanish 2 class content as described above.




ADVANCED PLACEMENT SPANISH


By the end of AP Spanish, students will feel confident in:

  • reading authentic written texts and understanding synonyms, homophones, cognates, false cognates, multiple meaning words, and word derivations.
  • listening and comprehending Spanish intended for native speakers in a variety of settings, types of discourse, topics, styles, registers and regional variations.
  • understanding and using idioms and expressions from different Spanish-speaking countries.
  • communicating with native speakers and discussing/debating current events.
  • expressing their ideas accurately and fluently when writing analytical or persuasive essays in reaction to a text or personal, academic, cultural or social issue.
Cultural instruction includes study of all Spanish-speaking countries, their people and their holidays.

Level: Advanced

Prerequisite: a minimum of 90% oral competency in Spanish 3 class content as described above, and approval by instructor. Spanish 4 may be offered as an alternative for those students who have not yet mastered verb conjugation and other essential language skills.




FRENCH

FRENCH 1


In this beginners' course, students will learn how to:

  • have fun speaking French
  • introduce and describe people
  • describe places
  • make comparisons (people and places)
  • talk about family members
  • use numbers in real situations
  • conjugate regular verbs and common irregular verbs in present tense
  • conjugate verbs in immediate future tense
  • create your own sentences in the interrogative, negative and affirmative forms (present and immediate future tenses)
  • talk about what they like and dislike (express emotions)
  • talk about the weather
90% of study in the French courses will focus on conversation. The remainder will focus on writing and grammar.

At the end of French 1, students will be able to speak comfortably with a minimum vocabulary of 500 words.

Students will also learn about the culture, which includes religion, daily activities, food, music, sports, art, geography, tourist destinations, special events and holidays from different French-speaking countries.

Level: Beginners

Prerequisite: None




FRENCH 2


In this beginner/intermediate level course, students will learn how to:

  • have fun speaking French
  • review present and immediate future tenses
  • use prepositions to give directions
  • use prepositions to indicate location
  • conjugate common irregular verbs in present tense
  • conjugate reflective verbs
  • conjugate regular verbs in 'futur simple'
  • conjugate regular verbs in 'passé composé'
  • conjugate regular verbs in 'imparfait'
  • create their own sentences in the interrogative, negative and affirmative forms (passé composé, imparfait and futur simple)
90% of study in the French courses will focus on conversation. The remainder will focus on writing and grammar.

At the end of French 2, students will be able to speak comfortably with a minimum vocabulary of 800 words.

Students will also learn about the culture, which includes religion, daily activities, food, music, sports, art, geography, tourist destinations, special events and holidays from different French-speaking countries.

Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Prerequisite: A minimum of 80% oral competency in French 1 class content as described above.




French 3


In this intermediate-level course, students will learn how to:

  • have fun speaking French
  • talk about imaginary situations (conditional tense)
  • conjugate verbs in 'subjonctif présent'
  • conjugate verbs in 'plus-que-parfait'
  • conjugate verbs in 'passé simple'
  • read a short novel using 'passé simple'
  • write long stories, magazine articles, blog, etc.
Students will also learn about the culture, which includes religion, daily activities, food, music, sports, art, geography, tourist destinations, special events and holidays from different French-speaking countries.

90% of study in the French courses will focus on conversation. The remainder will focus on writing and grammar.

At the end of French 3, you will be able to speak comfortably with a minimum vocabulary of 1,000 words. The goal is that by the end of level 4, students will reach fluency.

Level: Intermediate

Prerequisite: A minimum of 80% oral competency in French 2 class content as described above.
