Director of Environmental Sustainability


Position Description

The Director of Sustainability is part of the Administrative Team and reports to the Head of School. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Assist in Energy and Resource Management
  • Work in Partnership to Integrate Sustainability into School Curriculum
  • Assist in Enhancing the Natural Environment of the School
  • Develop Community Partnerships
  • Facilitate the implementation and assessment of the BHS Sustainability Strategic Plan
  • Provide collaborative input as a part of the Administrative Team regarding sustainability budget, programming, curriculum, and practice
  • Collaborate with the Head of School, administrators, staff, faculty, and students toward the development of environmentally sustainable practices and policies for school operations.
  • Provide information-based professional development opportunities regarding environmental sustainability education, curriculum, and practice to BHS faculty and staff
  • Develop environmental sustainability outreach opportunities that inform and incorporate the extended BHS community, the greater Ojai Valley, regional independent schools, and member schools of the California and National Associations of Independent Schools
  • Facilitate Besant Hill’s charter membership in the Green Schools Alliance and our role as California Regional Contact for the National Green Schools Alliance
  • Work as a Liaison to the School’s CSA Farm
  • Oversee and maintain the school’s Bioswale
  • Oversee the care of the school’s garden and fruit trees
  • Teach 3 sections in the Science department, including AP Environmental Science
  • Oversee the Sustainability Club
  • Work as a part of the school’s Residential Duty Team
  • As a member of the Administrative Team, collaborate with other administrators in all other areas of administrative responsibility and duty

Additional Committee Responsibilities (seasonal/cyclical/as-needed):

  • Member of Besant Hill School Leadership Team
  • Meet monthly with other administrators to provide feedback and decision-making in partnership with the head of school
  • Member of Curriculum Committee
  • Work with a small group of administrators and faculty members to review and amend curricular offerings and structures.
  • Chair the Environmental Sustainability Committee
  • Work with a small group of administrators and faculty members to review/recommend operational practices regarding the fulfillment of the school’s environmental sustainability strategic plan

The ideal candidate will be an inspiring leader and mentor with several years of experience in environmental science, boarding schools, teaching, and other job-related duties. It is preferred that the applicant has a strong work history that includes providing strategic direction and operational practice guidelines in the area of environmental sustainability. The candidate should also possess excellent planning and analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work collegially with a dedicated faculty and staff.
